The primary purpose of the Mulherin Custodial Home is to make a Home for mentally and physically challenged children of all ages.

 

Our foremost concern is the happiness, comfort, and welfare of these children.  Mulherin has many other purposes as well.

 

To spare the challenged child the anguish of competing in a normal world.

 

To help other members of the family having to maintain as nearly as possible a normal home for their other children.

 

To relieve the mental, financial and physical stress, as the case may be in caring for special needs child.

 

While the purpose of our Home is to help in may areas, it is never to assume the family’s responsibility.  Only when a child has no family does Mulherin Home assume full responsibility for the child’s care.  By the Home working with the family, family ties, which are so important, are maintained and strengthened where they would often be strained or broken.  Our Home feels that the family needs to share in the care of their loved one, and it has been proven that even the most profoundly retarded individual has a need for the love of its own family.

 

The program of the Mulherin Custodial Home consist of ministering to the many individual needs of each child, giving the child love and affection as well as keeping them clean and well fed.  The home is a non-profit corporation administered by a Board of Directors composed of representative citizens and parents, who give freely and willingly of their time.
